Fatal flaw at heart of Brown's nuclear roadmap

Gordon Brown has launched the 'Road to 2010' document which outlines how the UK Government is supporting a renaissance in nuclear power whilst simultaneously professing a desire to limit nuclear weapons proliferation.

The document is intended to show that the UK is committed to “tackling the nuclear challenges we face today” in the run-up to next year's Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference.

However, the flaws in the Prime Minister's plan were soon made clear.

For example, Labour MP Paul Flynn called the policy “deeply, seriously mad”, describing it as amounting to “British sponsored nuclear proliferation”.

Meanwhile, Louise Edge, spokesperson for Greenpeace UK, welcomed Brown's “positive noises towards eliminating nuclear weapons” but pointed out that “You simply can't spread nuclear power without spreading nuclear weapons technology”.
