Letter hand-in to No.10 and Nuclear Abolition Day
On 2nd June, as part of the UK's contribution to Nuclear Abolition Day, CND and ICAN-UK delivered a letter to the new Prime Minister calling for concrete action on disarmament, taking forward the outcomes of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference (NPT), held at the United Nations during May.
CND and ICAN-UK were joined by a number of newly-elected MPs who were keen to highlight the new parliament's concern over the issues of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
Participating in the hand-in of the letter were: Kate Hudson (CND Chair), Rebecca Johnson (ICAN Vice-Chair), General Sir Hugh Beach, Sheila Gilmore (Labour, Edinburgh East), Julian Huppert MP (Liberal Democrats, Cambridge) and Eilidh Whiteford MP (SNP, Banff and Buchan).
The letter called on the government to outline how it will carry out the agreement made at the NPT to 'accelerate concrete progress on the steps leading to nuclear disarmament' and also called for the UK to 'support a nuclear weapons convention'.
The letter, whose signatories included several ICAN-UK patrons, was subsequently published in the Guardian.
For Nuclear Abolition Day itself on June 5th, Christian CND and nuclear disarmament campaigners organised events at Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Establishment and Faslane Naval Base.
As part of this global day of action for a Nuclear Weapons Convention, activists at Aldermaston shared a peace picnic before taking part in a game-show style contest to interpret the letters NWC (Nuclear Weapons Convention). More photos, videos and a full report on the day to follow.
